Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract: By far the most clinically proven plant extract for supporting cerebral function, Ginkgo has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, promote nerve conductivity and improve memory in elderly patients. Our raw material is of highest potency and the 120 mg dose matches many of the positive clinical trials.
Vinpocetine: Widely considered to be neuroprotective, vinpocetine has been shown to increase both cerebral blood flow and brain glucose uptake in animal experiments. As a neuroprotective agent, vinpocetine helps maintain circulatory and neurological strength in the brain. Further, the ability of vinpocetine to inhibit phosphodiesterase is likely to play a relevant role in long term memory enhancement. An alkaloid derivative of vincamine, which in turn is extracted from the periwinkle plant (Vinca minor), Ortho Molecular has chosen a comparatively significant dose in keeping with many of the clinical trials.
Huperzine: Huperzine is a nutraceutical extracted from Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata) that works as a potent, selective and long-term protector of the naturally occurring neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (ACh). To effectively enhance memory and learning, it is critical for ACh to have uninhibited performance, a function that is hindered by the presence of acetylcholine esterase (AChE), which works to break down ACh. By effectively blocking the activity of AChE, huperzine supplementation yields increased ACh levels, which are important for generating optimal neurotransmission for critical brain functions- especially memory. This mechanism has been studied for simple memory and learning, as well as neurological function in the elderly.
Studies have shown huperzine to improve memory in several animal models as well as human clinical trials, and has been shown to be safe and effective. Most clinical research has studied doses of 100 mcg per day, which we have included in Membrin.
Research
Past studies have determined that mobile phone use and the subsequent emission of low level EMR (electromagnetic radiation) can lead to oxidative damage in brain tissue. Ginkgo biloba has been shown to prevent mobile phone induced oxidative tissue damage.
